Port Orford ~ Rest, Relax, Recharge!

Located along the Southern Oregon Coast, Port Orford is where the ocean breeze meets the forest trees. Travelers, whether for business or leisure, visit our pristine and quaint fishing village to Rest, Relax and Recharge! The quiet solitude and picturesque surroundings create an atmosphere of serenity, affording all who visit the opportunity to experience revitalization of mind, body and soul.

For the explorer, Port Orford offers adventure by providing several historical points of interest. The port offers a unique treat for the eyes to behold, as it operates one of only two dolly docks located within the United States. Not only is this the only dock of its kind in Oregon, but along the entire Pacific Coastline. For those unaware of the dolly dock principle, Port Orford's commercial fisherman are only able to enter the water via crane, making for a fascinating afternoon watch.

For a little bit of culture, there are several art galleries owned and operated by local artists who contribute their own whimsical sense of creativity and charm. Other crafty residents, with their own unique artistic flare, can be found at Port Orford's very own Saturday Farmer's Market, which operates seasonally (May to September) from 9:00 to noon. The market offers an array of baked goods, fresh and locally grown organic produce, pottery, jewelry and other keepsake mementos that are sure to delight. The Farmer's Market is located in the parking lot of Port Orford's very own "CommUnity" Co-Op along the Highway 101 Corridor. Featuring organic produce, a variety of organic bulk food products, grains, nuts, annually caught seafood and locally raised beef, are among the many wholesome and delicious foods offered.

Historical Points of Interest

Cape Blanco Lighthouse

Visible from 22 miles off shore and considered a Port Orford treasure, is the Cape Blanco Lighthouse. The specific location of this particular lighthouse is considered the furthest most westerly point within the continental United States. Proposed in 1864, Cape Blanco was the first of its kind to be outfitted with a "first-order Fresnel lens," which was added in 1870. In 1936, the first-order lens was replaced with a state of the art second-order lens. To this day, the Cape Blanco lighthouse still guides fisherman, sailors and boating enthusiasts safely to shore.

Lighthouse Tours are available annually for a meager $2.00 fee from April through of October. Although closed every Tuesday, the lighthouse is open to the public from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday through Monday. Tickets are available at the lovely gift shop where memorabilia abounds and visitors can purchase Cape Blanco specific items, as well as other unique ditties pertaining to all the wonderful lighthouses along the entire Oregon Coastline.

Hughes House

Nearby ~ just a short jaunt before traveling due West to the Cape Blanco Lighthouse, is the beautifully restored Victorian Hughes House Museum. Originally built in 1898, the Hughes House became a member of the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Rich in Port Orford history, visiting the Hughes House provides a fantastic and unique opportunity to step back in time. As you meander through on guided tour, a fabulous, friendly and knowledgable volunteer will provide an upclose and personal look at Port Orford's historical and humble beginnings.

Port Orford Lifeboat Station

This wonderful historical site features a restored Coast Guard Station, shipwreck memorabilia, and many artifacts from the years when the Coast Guard Station was providing services to ships. Located at the top of Coast Guard Road, the museum is rich in historical information relating to the World War II era. Many visitors are often surprised to find that this particular Coast Guard station was activelly involved in protecting the United States from enemy warfare.
